Matthew Spector

As a therapist and fellow human, I bring a set of skills based on my education, training, and lived experience to each session. First and foremost, I always aim to provide an unconditional, accepting, and empathic space for you to explore what it is that has led you to seek out support. This welcoming and nonjudgmental environment is the cornerstone of my work. Together, we will get to the bottom of whatever it is that may be contributing to your unwanted emotional experience, and create a space where we can collaborate on ways you can begin to feel more at ease, empowered, and in alignment with your personal values, goals, and unique identity.

As a Liberation-focused psychotherapist committed to my own unlearning, I strive to explore the ways in which we absorb oppression, and uncover how that oppression affects our self-concept and existence in the world. At times, I may task myself with supporting and encouraging you to actively engage in transforming the social oppression in which we are all immersed, helping you cultivate the liberatory power you hold inside. With that said, I often work with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, transgender/gender non-binary community, and the rest of us who are affected by the White supremacist, heteronormative, patriarchal, capitalist society in which we live. I do not shy away from acknowledging my own Whiteness and cis identity in the room and hope to build a space where we can openly discuss how our shared and/or differing identities impact our work together.
