Sarah Buino
I’m Sarah, the founder of Head/Heart Therapy. I started the practice because I wanted to create a space where people felt free to bring their whole, authentic selves. So much of evidence-based therapy misses the unique aspects of each human that make us who we are. I like to blend knowledge of human behavior, my understanding of white supremacy culture, and intuition to see each client as clearly as possible. I believe therapy is both an art and a science and I spend time studying both in order to best support my clients.
I identify as bisexual and with that have often felt just on the outside of the dominant group. In fact, there are many areas of my life I’d consider to be on the border of what many would consider “normal.” I have also experienced trauma and know the pain of trying to reconnect to myself and my community after deep wounding.
The concept of healing is deeply important to me. I believe my mission in this lifetime is to seek my own healing and in doing so, I’ve been able to help others along that path.
My primary modality for therapy is NARM, the neuroaffective relational model. NARM believes that all maladaptive issues stem from developmental childhood trauma. And that trauma results in survival strategies that were necessary in order to maintain connection with our caregivers in early life. And in our adult lives, those survival strategies no longer serve us.
I see all humans as suffering from early traumas and hope to support healing of root causes to reconnect clients with their authentic selves.
I also recognize when our judgments get in the way of being our best selves and I am not afraid to compassionately challenge a client when I see their thoughts/feelings/behaviors are out of alignment with what they want for themselves.
Clients have said I am empathetic and compassionate, but also take no shit. 😉
